At the age of 13, when living in Australia with his family, O'Rourke was given his first guitar by a priest in Kyabram who recognised his potential and love for music, hence the title of his debut album Since Kyabram, released in October 2004.
By 24, he returned to Ireland and landed in the thick of an explosive Dublin music scene that proved a fertile breeding ground for the young artist and his contemporaries. Declan has released seven studio records to date, five of which enjoyed top five status in the national charts of his native Ireland. In April of 2021, his 7th studio record, Arrivals, produced by Paul Weller of The Jam, reached #2 in Ireland, and was nominated for International Album of the Year by the Americana Music Association, UK. His literary debut, The Pawnbroker’s Reward (released Nov of same year), reached #2 in the Hardback Fiction bestseller’s chart, staying in the top five for 7 weeks. Sept 2023 saw the release of his second book.
The Galway-based artist has been praised by song writing giants and media figures such as John Prine, Jon Pareles, and Paul Weller, and has been covered by an array of world-class artists, including Christy Moore, Camille O’Sullivan, Josh Groban, and Eddi Reader.
